Giant Green Monkey
Tree Frog

Kambo is a potent substance that is derived from the Giant Green Monkey Tree Frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor). This frog is found in the Amazon basin of Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, and Peru. The secretion of this frog has various names, including Sapo, Vacina do Sapo, Kampu, and Dow kiet.
Indigenous tribes such as the Yawanawa, Katukina, Amahuaca, Marubo, Matses, Kaxinawa, and others have been using Kambo for thousands of years. Each tribe has its own history of how they discovered and started using Kambo. The Kaxinawa tribe has a legendary story of Kampum, a medicine man who received a visit from a female spirit of the forest while under the influence of powerful plant medicines. She showed him a frog with a secretion that would cure his brothers and sisters who were suffering from a terrible disease. After Kampum’s death, his spirit lived on as the frog.
Indigenous people still use Kambo today for various purposes. Traditionally, it is used in three ways: To cleanse, strengthen, and energise the minds and bodies of hunters to run faster and longer, to eat and sleep less. As a medicine for infections, snake bites, and malaria. To clear away dark and negative energy known as ‘Panema.’ When Panema is cleared, life flows more naturally.
Kambo is also becoming increasingly popular in non-indigenous communities as a way to improve physical and mental health. It is often used in holistic and alternative medicine practices to treat a range of conditions such as depression, anxiety, addiction, and chronic pain. However, it’s important to note that Kambo is a potent substance and should only be administered by trained and experienced practitioners. The application of Kambo involves burning the skin and applying the frog secretion to the resulting wound. It can cause intense physical and emotional sensations that require careful guidance and support.

Kambo frog has very few natural predators (mostly at the egg stage). Hence the frogs are not endangered, and are found in abundance. The only current threat to the frogs is the loss of their habitat due to deforestation.

The frog lives high up in the trees (possibly one of the reasons for the secretion is as a protection from sun rays) and the tribes lure them down by imitating their calls to them at dawn. The frog’s legs are carefully tied by each leg with straw strings onto an x shape. Sometimes the females massage the frog’s toes to encourage more secretion. The secretion is scraped off and dried on a stick. Only the 1st secretion is taken so the frog has enough of its defences.

After this process, the frog is released to its habitat not worse off. The tiny white line from the straw stops anyone else from harvesting the frog until it fades. The tribes work with the frogs in respectful ways to not upset the animal spirit. Kambo collected in this way is considered 100% ethically harvested, and that is why the frogs are passive, not afraid of the tribes and keep coming down from the trees. The secretion benefits only work when frogs live in their natural habitat as some of the alkaloids are formed from their Amazonian diet.

There has been a lot of misinformation and misconceptions surrounding this medicine. Kambo can be taken as a single or double treatment, as an intensive treatment spread over several days and weeks, or the deepest cleanse, which is three treatments in three hours (only for seasoned clients). In some traditions, Kambo is also taken as a vaccine and is administered as 3 treatments over one moon cycle (29.5 days) – the famous vacina da floresta. The most effective way to take Kambo when you’re doing it for the first time is to take the medicine 3 days in a row as resistance drops and you go into deeper layers each time. The body and mind are in the process of release mode.

Imagine doing a cleanse 3 days in a row vs. 3 days in a month. You benefit from both but three days of cleansing takes you deeper. If that’s not possible, 3 times in a moon cycle works wonders as well. This process may be more suitable for more sensitive individuals. I recommend upon receiving the inoculation of 3, refreshing with Kambo once a month, every few months or once a year depending on your health status and needs.

The more treatments you have, the deeper this medicine and the purge goes. Some people will need several sessions to fully feel the benefit or be ready to release and let go of the deep stuff. Everyone will benefit from a single session, whether they believe in it or not. Every health condition has a different protocol. An early Lyme disease patient will benefit the most from several days of Kambo in a row as soon after the tick bite as possible, whereas depression or fertility treatments need different intervals.
